About SCOTT BOWLINGER
I started painting in early 2000 after my girlfriend gave me a great Christmas gift. It was an art seminar that promised a completed acrylic painting within three days. It was one of the most enjoyable and challenging times of my life. Andrea Bocelli singing in the background and about 12 students trying to make sense of it all...the drawing, the mixing of colors, the layering of paint and so many more aspects of painting that couldn't possibly be described or learned in a lifetime. I had never been more excited. I knew things would never be the same. Knowing that individual instruction was critical and that I didn't have the time to take off from work to get it....I ordered tapes and DVDs that would show me what I needed. My first set of tapes (about 16) were from Helen Van Wyk and I attribute more of my learning to her than any other. Then came the other instructionists: Ben Stahl, Richard Schmid, Daniel Greene, Skip Lawrence, Jay Moore, et al. First, I learned the basics, e.g., body tone, body shadow, cast shadow, highlight, reflection, and then the more subtle necessities that made a painting come to life. There really is outstanding instruction out there for anyone ready to give painting a try. But, like everything else, it is hard work...but enjoyable, hard work. To me, it is problem solving and like any kind of practice - that which you learn stays with you to assist you in the next problem.
